What is IVF Treatment?

IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization. It is a fertility treatment where the eggs are combined with sperm outside of the human body. It is the complex process of retrieving eggs from ovaries or combining them with sperm and putting them in the lab for fertilization. When the egg gets fertilized, it gets placed inside the uterus. This method is then used by people who have problems conceiving a child. Pregnancy occurs after fertilization when the embryo gets implanted into the uterine wall.

Steps of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Step 1- Egg Collection

A thin needle is passed into each of your ovaries through your vagina. This needle is attached to a suction device to pull your eggs out of each follicle.
After this, your eggs got placed in the dish containing a unique solution. And after that particular dish is put in an incubator. Medication or mild sedation is used to decrease your discomfort during the procedure. After your last hormone injection, egg retrieval is completed in 36 hours.

Step 2- Fertilization

The embryologist will try to fertilize all mature eggs using intracytoplasmic sperm injection. It refers to the sperm that is injected into each mature egg. The immature eggs are then placed in a dish with sperm or nutrients. If the immature eggs do not become mature, then the sperm in the dish will attempt to fertilize the egg.
If ten mature eggs are retrieved, seven will fertilize successfully; then, the fertilized egg will become an embryo.

Step 3- Embryo development

The development of your embryo is thus carefully monitored after five to six days after egg retrieval.
• You might give a mild sedative. This procedure is usually painless, but you will experience mild cramping.
• This doctor will insert a long, thin, flexible tube into your vagina, known as a catheter, into your uterus.
• With the help of a syringe containing one or more embryos, put up in a small amount of fluid attached to the catheter.
• And by using this syringe, the doctor places the embryo into your uterus.
• Your embryo overcomes significant hurdles to become an embryo suitable for transfer to your uterus, and 50% of fertilized embryos progress to the blastocyst stage.

Step 4- Pregnancy

When the embryo implants itself into the lining of your uterus, pregnancy occurs at the following time. The healthcare providers will use blood tests to determine whether you are pregnant or not. After fertilization, the embryo is transferred to the person who intends to carry the pregnancy, either by using or not using various fertility medications.
